Information

Since our founding in November 2021, as The Stalham Broads WI with 20 members, we have steadily grown in size, and currently membership is just under 40. We hold regular meetings on the 2nd Monday of the month at 10:00am, usually in the Stalham Town Hall. In addition to the monthly meeting we also plan regular social events and outings in the local area.

As a newer WI we put less emphasis on the more traditional views of the WI, as we are less about jam and Jerusalem, more learning and making friends. That is not to say we don’t do traditional when required and if anything, we have a healthy respect for it. There is a time and a place for everything.

By meeting in the morning we feel we can attract both young and old to the group. For young mums we can offer an escape from the mundane. You can drop your children off at school and then have some me time with like minded women and for the older generation we can give you a location where you aren’t judged on your age. All members of the group, regardless of age, have plenty to offer we feel.

HISTORY OF THE WI IN STALHAM

The Stalham Broads WI is not the first WI to have been formed in the town. The original Stalham WI was formed in 1922 and would have celebrated it's centenary in 2022 if it hadn't been for it's closure around 2012 (it was rather fitting that its 'phoenix' group therefore celebrated it's first anniversary in 2022). There are several reminders of the original WI to be found in the town, in the form of the old town sign (Stalham has two signs, one at either end of the High Street), a memorial garden (which is now looked after by the Stalham in Bloom group), two Jubilee trees, one for Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee in 1977 (in the grounds of the town's library) and one for the Golden Jubilee (near the old town sign in the memorial garden).

The Stalham Broads WI has now added our own tree to the collection. A Crab Apple sapling was planted on 3 July 2023 to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.
